Sri Lanka is a year-round destination, but because it is an island affected by two distinct monsoons, the "best time" entirely depends on which coast you want to visit.

1. The South and West Coast (December to April)

If you are planning to visit the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya), the Hill Country (Ella, Kandy), and the Southern beaches (Galle, Mirissa, Bentota), the best time to visit is during the Northern Hemisphere's winter. The weather is dry, sunny, and perfect for beach lounging and sightseeing.

2. The East Coast (May to September)

When the southwest coast is experiencing rain, the East Coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay, Nilaveli) comes alive with brilliant sunshine and calm, clear waters perfect for diving and surfing.

• January - March: Peak season. Perfect weather in the South and West. Great for wildlife safaris in Yala.
• April - May: The transition months. April is hot and humid. May brings the start of the Yala monsoon to the southwest.
• June - August: Head to the East Coast! Trincomalee and Arugam Bay are stunning. The Cultural Triangle is also mostly dry.
• September - November: Inter-monsoonal season. Weather can be unpredictable island-wide with afternoon thunderstorms.
• December: Rains begin to clear in the South and West, marking the start of the winter tourist season.
